I am not so vain as to think I have a perfect track record.
There have been times I am sure I was a let down rather than a lift up.
As I have gotten older, wiser and scarred from being let down myself ... awareness and wisdom have come to stand beside me and offer a better perspective and vantage point.
I like to think, I have become better overall, at being a reliable friend.

I may not always call.  Life may hurry me around.  But should they need me, I hope they know.

Our thoughts go through our rolodex and we pause on each face and name to ponder if that person would be there to carry you through a time ... but may I make a suggestion?  Ask first how many of our friends would put a check mark by our name ?
